Nieuwe VVN Voorzitter / New VVN President: Professor Jan Wouters

Geachte VVN-leden en sympathisanten,

Graag kondigt de VVN aan dat afgelopen vrijdag 15 maart 2013 haar Algemene Vergadering Prof. Dr. Jan Wouters unaniem verkozen heeft tot de nieuwe voorzitter van de vereniging. Hij volgt met onmiddellijk effect uittredend voorzitter Prof. Dr. Frank Maes op.

Prof. Dr. Jan Wouters, gewoon hoogleraar internationaal recht en internationale instellingen aan de KU Leuven, was reeds voorzitter in de periode 2003-2009. Graag  stelt VVN u toch nog even haar nieuwe voorzitter voor.

Jan Wouters werd geboren te Deurne in  1964. Hij studeerde rechten en filosofie aan de Universiteit Antwerpen (UFSIA/UIA, 1987). Hij behaalde een Master of Laws (LL.M.) aan Yale University in 1990, was Visiting Researcher aan Harvard Law School  in 1990-91 en werd  doctor in de rechten aan de KU Leuven  in 1996.

Hij was achtereenvolgens assistent aan de UIA  (1987-90), referendaris bij het Hof van Justitie van de Europese Gemeenschappen (1991-94), docent, vervolgens hoofddocent en hoogleraar aan de Universiteit Maastricht (1993-2003), en is sinds 1 oktober 1998 titularis van de leerstoel internationaal recht en internationale instellingen aan de KU Leuven, waar hij in 1999 het Instituut voor Internationaal Recht oprichtte. Aan de KU Leuven doceert hij internationaal recht, internationale instellingen, het recht van de Wereldhandelsorganisatie en internationaal humanitair recht. Daarnaast is hij gasthoogleraar inzake het recht van de externe betrekkingen van de EU aan het Europacollege (Brugge) en Sciences Po (Parijs). Sinds 2007 is hij directeur van het Leuven Centre for Global Governance Studies en voorzitter van de Strategische Adviesraad internationaal Vlaanderen (SARiV). Sinds 2009 is hij tevens Jean Monnet Leerstoelhouder ad personam EU and Global Governance en lid van de Koninklijke Vlaamse Academie van België voor Wetenschappen en Schone Kunsten. Hij heeft een 500-tal publicaties op zijn actief. Hij is actief in talrijke internationale onderzoeksnetwerken en tijdschriften, adviseert verscheidene internationale organisaties en geeft vaak opleidingen aan internationale ambtenaren.

Het is dan ook met veel trots dat de VVN  haar nieuwe voorzitter welkom heet, en uitkijkt naar de toekomstige activiteiten. Daarnaast wenst de VVN ook haar uittredende voorzitter, Prof. Dr. Frank Maes, hartelijk te danken voor zijn vele toegewijde jaren bij de vereniging.

Last Friday, 15 March 2013, our UNA’s annual general meeting was held. VVN announces with great pleasure that Prof. Dr. Jan Wouters was elected unanimously as our new President. He takes over, with immediate effect, from the resigning President Prof. Dr. Frank Maes.

Prof. Dr. Jan Wouters, who is full Professor of International Law and International Organizations at KU Leuven, was already President of VVN in 2003-2009. Nevertheless, we would like to provide you with a brief introduction of our new President.

Jan Wouters was born in Deurne, 1964. He studied law and philosophy in Antwerp (1982-1987), obtained a Master of Laws (LL.M.) at Yale University (1990), was Visiting Researcher at Harvard Law School (1990-91) and obtained his PhD in Law at KU Leuven (1996).

He has been assistant of law at Antwerp University (1987-90), référendaire (legal secretary) at the Court of Justice of the European Communities (1991-1994),  professor at  Maastricht University, and since 1 October 1998 he holds the Chair in International Law and International Organizations at the University of Leuven, where he founded the Insititute for International Law in 1999.  At the University of Leuven he teaches  international law, international organizations, law of the WTO and international humanitarian law. He also teaches EU external relations law as a Visiting Professor at the College of Europe (Bruges) and at Sciences Po (Paris). Since 2007 he is Director of the Leuven Centre for Global Governance Studies and President of the Flemish Foreign Affairs Council (SARiV). In 2009 he became Jean Monnet Chair ad personam EU and Global Governance and was elected a Member of the Royal Flemish Academy of Belgium for Sciences and Arts. He has around 500 publications, participates in numerous international research networks, advises various international organizations and often trains international officials.
